OpenAI halves mid and light tier prices with GPT-6 Sol and Luna
OpenAI released GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna on September 22, 2026, replacing GPT-5.6 Sol and Luna. Sol costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 output; Luna costs $0.10 and $0.50. OpenAI says these are standard prices, not a launch discount. Both share GPT-6 Astra's shape: a 1.05M context window, 128K max output, text and image in, text out. They are in ChatGPT, Codex, the API and GitHub Copilot.

Why it matters
Luna at $0.50 output makes high-volume extraction and summarisation cheap enough that the model is rarely the biggest cost. Sol's price is now the same as Claude Sonnet 5.5's.
Who should care
Teams running bulk text jobs, and anyone still on GPT-5.6 Sol or Luna
What you can do
Move GPT-5.6 Luna jobs to gpt-6-luna. For Sol, skip straight to GPT-6.1 Sol, which shipped a week later at the same price.
