Questions

Are my files uploaded?
No. Each image is decoded and re-encoded by your own browser, so nothing is sent anywhere and nothing is stored.
Which format should I convert to?
WebP is the safe modern default: it is smaller than JPG, keeps transparency, and every current browser reads it. AVIF is smaller again but slower to encode. Use PNG when you need lossless output or transparency with maximum compatibility, and JPG when something old has to open the file.
What happens to transparency when I convert to JPG?
JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent pixels are flattened onto a solid color. You choose which one, and white is the default. Convert to WebP, AVIF or PNG instead if you need the transparency kept.
Why is my converted file sometimes larger?
Converting a small, already-optimised JPG to PNG makes it much bigger, because PNG is lossless and photographs do not compress losslessly. That is expected. Going the other way, or to WebP or AVIF, almost always shrinks it.
Is any quality lost?
Converting to PNG is lossless. Converting to JPG, WebP or AVIF re-encodes with the quality you set, and re-encoding an already lossy image always loses a little. Keep quality at 85 or above when converting between lossy formats.
What about animated GIFs and SVG?
Both are rasterized. An animated GIF converts to a still first frame, and an SVG converts to a fixed-size bitmap, losing the ability to scale.
